This year, I used photography to find the interesting in the mundane. How do different life forms express emotions? There are many interesting things in everyday life that we often overlook. I moved towards the “moments” because I was conscious of the fact that we often get caught up in our own worlds and miss out on the beauties of the world. I learned that if you take the time to slow down and look around, you will always find something beautiful or interesting.
Crafting this portfolio has made me much more observant of the world around me. I had to learn to move around much slower, when shooting street photography I would be very deliberate and patient. For the picture I took in Times Square, I had to position myself and wait in a sea of tourists for just the right shot. I often didn’t really plan my shoots, I just went out and looked for things that piqued my interest. I captured multiple subjects in a lot of my photos to show juxtaposition of emotions. I experimented with different color editing styles, often going to black and white to better emphasize my subjects. The photo of the “banjo man” is my best example of this, the black and white really brings out the emotion in the scene. I think there is a visible increase in the quality of my street photography from the very first ones I took in NYC to the ones I recently took in Milan. Another thing I experimented with was ski photography. I have learned a lot of new editing techniques and I think my SI reflects that. My photo of the cow or the one in Times Square shows how I have learned to use masks and improve my edits
